My Mother turned 50 late last year and we waited to celebrate once everyone was in town for Christmas. The event that I was most excited about was her birthday tea. If you live in Memphis or find yourself in Memphis, add tea at Chez Philippe in the Peabody Hotel to your edible bucket list Memphis edition.
I have had tea at Memphis’ famed hotel a couple of times before, so I knew we were in for a treat that afternoon.
After you make your way through the hotel and walk through the gilded gate that leads you into the restaurant you are greeted by an all male staff ready to attend to your every need in what seems like Buckingham Palace.
First things first, what type of tea you would prefer in your pot. I selected Earl Gray, no surprise there 🙂
What is a part with out party favors?
After your pot of tea is brought out, the server pours your first cup while you await the first course.
A selection of 5 sandwiches is the savory course of the afternoon. The sandwiches that day were prosciutto and shaved asparagus, chicken and walnut salad, salmon and capers on cream cheese, crab salad, and sliced tomatoes and cucumbers.
My favorites were the chicken salad and the crab salad.
My favorite course is next, the scone! The scone we received that afternoon was laced with dried cherries. It was warm, flaky, buttery— it was perfect.
The fact that I generously schmeared it with devonshire clotted cream had nothing to do with it, I am sure.
Lastly, the sweets. Just when you feel as you cannot eat another bite, a tower of dessert appears.
Chocolate covered strawberries, mango macarons, dark chocolate cups filled with vanilla cream, red velvet cake, and a walnut and ginger tart wrap up the luxurious tea.
Happy Birthday, Mom! I love you very much and I am so thankful for an opportunity to celebrate your life.
